“Can you help my friend to find a job? He lost his job” asked my best friend.
“Sure, but I will have to look at his resume before that” said me.
“He is 45 this year, he had sent in his resume numerous times yet he did not receive any reply” said my friend.
2020, it is indeed the year of outbreak for unemployment. Many enterprise or employees are facing the issue of dismissal, salary reduction.
It may not be a big deal for young graduates to become unemployed as there are a lot of job opportunities for them in the market. Or, they could try to start up their own business or online sales; there are many opportunities anyway. Youth, is their capital. Even if they fail, they could start it over again.
However, for those whose have been in the workforce for more than a decade, unemployment is not just a loss of paycheck, it also is a loss of part of their life, security, social networks and also once identity.
The workplace can be cruel. Whenever I met job seekers who are over 40, I feel very emotional. On one hand, I were hoping to assist them in finding their next job sooner, so that they are able to enter the work force as soon as possible, nevertheless the truth is, there is an age limit for most of the enterprise. As times flies, if they are able to build relationship and skills during their prime of career, even if these happened, it will greatly reduce their anxiety.
I once asked an enterprise executive for his advice for unemployed man over 40.
“Entrepreneurship” said him while smiling.
“All my job opportunities were referrals after I was over 30” he said.
These leave a deep impression in me. After the age of 35, job hunting is highly dependable on “word of mouth” and “personal connection”. For job seekers after the age of 35, employer will not pay much attention to your resume, they would be looking at your “self-values” and your past accomplishments.
Therefore, whether you like it or not, or if you are able or unable to accept, the industry is brutally realistic. If you have yet to build your self-value, you will feel anxious as you grow old.
After 35, your talents are no longer waiting to be discovered, you have to the one where scouts are able to spot you on easily.
