Is it irresponsible for employees to resign, knowing that their current company is lacking manpower? 

Here are some of the answers people may give:

Answer A: It’s not, it is none of the employees’ business if the company is lacking manpower.

Answer B: It’s not, but it will not leave a good impression on the company and they may even be blacklisted or despised. 

Answer C: It depends on how the company treats their employees on a daily basis.

Answer D: Yes, it is. Employees should be grateful for their company and not abandon ship when there’s a manpower crisis.

The answer goes on and on, and this is a controversial topic with no right answers for it. 

From a Company’s Perspective

Even under normal circumstances, employee resignations will immediately affect other employees who remain, especially in terms of the sudden workload to take over roles. 

Besides that, employees leave the company along with all of their knowledge, skills and experience with them. It could take more than a year for the remaining employees to fully take over and be as productive as the predecessors.

When a company lacks manpower, these adverse effects multiply in severity. Is that it? Should we just blame the employees for abandoning a sinking ship? Don’t judge too early as well.

Sometimes, a high turnover rate indicates that something is seriously wrong with the company’s culture, people and management. People also quit because of their bosses, for example due to their management styles, limited growth and more.

To all the employees facing this dilemma, think about the real reason behind initiating your resignation. Is it because of the nature of the company?

If the company provides no room for growth, has bad management and a toxic working culture, then abandoning the ship would be reasonable. 

Nevertheless, it is always important to ensure a comprehensive and smooth handover to your successors before leaving. Make sure that you resign gracefully and elegantly.
