Resignation Etiquette

Resignation Etiquette

Ironically, often during a resignation, an employer can truly see the real character of the employee.

It would definitely be a good feeling for most employers the moment they receive the resignation letter, especially if the employee is the one they have been nurturing for so long.  When an employee resigns the first time those employers experience this feeling the most.

It is also the time that could reflect the character of the employee.

A boss could switch attention to improving the skill on how to identify the right employee. I have a friend who once relied heavily on one of her employees. This employee worked extremely aggressively when she first joined the company. She always worked overtime to develop new clients and always seemed too busy. Hence, everyone in the company (including my friend) thought that she was a committed team player.

3 years later, she became emotional and often complained that the often-changing company direction made it hard for her to adapt, and she resigned.

Surprisingly, after her resignation, she found out that the tasks that had been handled by her were not as complicated as she had said. In fact, they were so easy that they could be taken over by another new team member.

Another shocking fact that was found out by my friend after her resignation, was she had not even taken her role seriously. She was supposed to deliver souvenirs to the company’s clients for one event that was hosted 2 years before, but she hadn’t even delivered these, despite her promises during the event, saying she would do so.

In short, the impression she created to make her colleagues feel that she was committed, was just an illusion. Perhaps she herself didn’t even realise that she might not possess the competency.

This case has made my friend learn a lesson by realising being busy might not mean being competent.

In fact, every resignation could be a new learning chapter for every employer. I understand how disappointing that could be but, trust me, you would eventually be much stronger.

Likewise, a resignation could also reflect the employer’s character. A good boss would give their blessing to the employee for the new endeavour, but would not hold a grudge and have a sense of “betrayal”. The world is small -, just keep future collaboration prospects intact.

As an employee, it’s crucial to know how to exit gracefully. Hand over properly and don’t spread negative vibes in the workplace. Resigning properly helps keep your future opportunities open. You never know where you might want to work, or whom you will end up working with. Leave gracefully, so that you don’t burn any bridges.
